Leadership of Curriculum, English
Secondary Phase
President Kennedy School

I am an Assistant Headteacher leading English at President Kennedy School. I have taught in Coventry for the past four years and prior to that I taught in Walsall schools. As the Subject Leader of English at President Kennedy I led the improvement journey of English from ‘satisfactory’ (2010) to ‘outstanding’ (2013).

My role at President Kennedy involves leading on leadership and management, teaching and learning, performance of progress and attainment and the curriculum within the English department. Since arriving at President Kennedy I have built an English curriculum across all keys stages which not only meets the needs of the individual but also enables students to make exceptional progress. This has led to sustained improvement culminating in last year’s success when 92% of students made three levels of progress and 54% made four levels of progress. The English department at President Kennedy School is now in the top 1% of schools in the country for progress.

As part of my role I have also led the drive on whole school literacy, both delivering CPD and driving whole school initiatives across subjects and the curriculum.

Prior to teaching in Coventry I taught in challenging schools in Walsall and was promoted to be Subject Leader of English in a school in special measures. At the time English results were 26% A*-C and by the time I left they had doubled to 52% A*-C. The school came out of ‘special measures’ in 2011 partly due to the success of the English department.

Over the years I have always been involved in driving outstanding Teaching and Learning across schools and have delivered many CPD sessions around this including Assessment for Learning, Differentiation for Progress, Challenge in classroom and Outstanding teaching and learning.

I see my SLE role in English and Leadership of Curriculum as an exciting opportunity to work within the widest possible community of schools to strengthen whole school systems and further develop the talented individuals within it.
